Historic Dornoch Castle in North Highlands up for sale

Dornoch Castle Hotel, situated 40 miles to the north of Inverness in Sutherland, has been put up for sale by its current owners and boasts 25 bedrooms and a 3-star experience.

Steeped in heritage and atmosphere, the castle is a remnant of the 15th century palace of the Bishop of Sutherland and sits conveniently across the road from the magnificent 12th century Dornoch Cathedral.

Current owners, Colin and Ros Thompson acquired the property in 2000 and attained planning permission for an 11-bedroom and 70-seater bistro expansion with a second kitchen and cellar, as well as permission to add 20 square feet of solar panels to be installed.

The Royal Dornoch Golf Course, situated just five minutes away, is the third oldest course in the world and is ranked in the World’s Top 20 Best Courses. The Hotel is in close proximity to a number of renowned whisky distilleries such as Dalmore; Glenmorganie and Balbair and offers year-round whisky tasting tours and events.

Colin and Ros admit they bought Dornoch Castle at the right time. They said: “Our close proximity to the cathedral is an absolute winner. We currently host around 15 weddings a year with many bridal parties hiring out the whole hotel. Dornoch Castle has been recession proof for us over the past six or seven years and we don’t see that changing,” commented Colin.
