London most expensive European city, says HRS

London has been named again as the most expensive European capital to stay in, according to hotel reservation service HRS.

New research revealed that the price of a hotel stay in London has increased by more than 10% compared to this time last year, with average room rates now reaching nearly £130.

This places London ahead of Paris and Copenhagen which both have average room rates of £117 per room.

In the UK, Edinburgh is the second most expensive city with an average rate of £97, an increase of almost 13% compared to 2013.

Meanwhile the cheapest room can be found in Liverpool, which saw a 2% decrease in room rates compared to 2013, averaging at £72 per night.

Jon West, managing director of HRS, UK and Ireland, said: “Thanks to the economic recovery, tourism is picking up again and this is reflected in the price increase of hotel rooms in the capital.”

HRS also found that the top three most expensive hotels were found in the US, with the list topped by New York, where room rates cost an average of £160. For one night’s stay in New York, travellers could have booked three nights in Shanghai (£53).
