Explosion reported at Peckham hotel
A small part of a room on the first floor of the hotel, which is currently being used as a shelter for homeless people during lockdown, was damaged by an explosion
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to reports of a fire and explosion at a hotel on Peckham Road, Peckham this weekend (23 January).
According to the London Fire Brigade, a small part of a room on the first floor of the hotel, which is currently being used as a shelter for homeless people during lockdown, was damaged by an explosion.
The explosion is currently believed to have involved a small cylinder.
Around 100 people left the building before the London Fire Brigade arrived, and one man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus carried out a “systematic” search of the building to ensure there were no further casualties or people trapped, however.
The incident was first reported at 1:44am, and was over by 5:21am. Fire crews from Peckham, New Cross, Old Kent Road and Brixton fire stations were all present at the scene.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation by both the brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
