Accor’s Mercure brand reached a significant milestone in 2024 with the opening of its 1,000th hotel, marking a century of existence since its founding in 1923. Among the latest additions were hotels in key locations such as London, Chandigarh, Fukuoka, Dubai, and Mexico. The Mercure London Earls Court, opened in July 2024, is particularly noteworthy for its Tardis-inspired design, paying homage to Doctor Who. The Mercure brand has grown steadily, with over 200 more hotels set to open by 2028, reinforcing its position as a global leader in midscale hospitality. Accor executives praised the brand’s expansion and adaptability in welcoming new properties, emphasising the importance of its strong partnerships with hoteliers.
Sunil Kanjanghat has been appointed general manager of Rutland Hall Hotel in Oakham. Kanjanghat brings extensive hospitality experience, having previously worked with Hand Picked Hotels, and various other properties, including Careys Manor Hotel and Senspa. Rutland Hall is a luxurious retreat offering diverse accommodations, including rooms with private balconies overlooking Rutland Water. Guests can enjoy its restaurant, Blossoms, along with leisure facilities such as a gym and wellness centre. Kanjanghat expressed excitement about his new role and looked forward to contributing to the hotel’s innovative projects in collaboration with owners Priyesh Patel MBE DL and Minesh Patel.
BWH Hotels is targeting Northern cities in England for expansion after a record year of growth in 2024. The brand added 832 rooms and 12 hotels across the UK, including its first long-stay property in Liverpool. BWH is seeking to collaborate with hoteliers in cities like Leeds and Manchester as part of its 2025 growth strategy. The company, with a global presence in 100 countries, offers independent hotels the chance to maintain autonomy while benefiting from the brand’s extensive global reach.
Dakota Hotels has appointed Mark Spanton as the general manager of its upcoming Newcastle property, set to open in spring 2025. Spanton has been with Dakota since 2020 and has led the Leeds location to numerous industry awards. The new Newcastle hotel will feature 118 rooms, a bar and grill, and is expected to create over 120 jobs. Spanton is eager to bring Dakota’s signature hospitality to the city and looks forward to establishing strong community connections.
