Mandarin Oriental has appointed Amanda Hyndman as its new chief operating officer, following the retirement of Christoph Mares. Hyndman, who also serves as the chief people and culture officer, brings over 30 years of experience in luxury hospitality. She joined the group 18 years ago and has held senior roles in various locations, including Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Washington, D.C. Her recent focus has been driving the shift from traditional HR to a People and Culture approach, supporting Mandarin Oriental’s growth strategy. CEO Laurent Kleitman praised Hyndman’s dedication, expressing confidence in her ability to help achieve the group’s expansion and innovation goals. Hyndman, in turn, expressed enthusiasm for her new role, citing her commitment to enhancing Mandarin Oriental’s reputation in luxury hospitality.
The Glasgow Marriott Hotel has achieved two environmental certifications: the Green Key eco-label and The Pledge on Food Waste. Green Key recognizes hotels that excel in energy efficiency, waste management, and sustainable practices, while The Pledge acknowledges food waste reduction efforts. The hotel has implemented several eco-friendly initiatives, including using Winnow AI to monitor food waste, promoting “Meat Free Mondays,” and eliminating single-use plastics. General Manager Chris McGuinness emphasised the hotel’s commitment to sustainability, noting that these certifications reflect their dedication to environmental responsibility and delivering an eco-conscious experience for guests.
The Avenue restaurant at Lainston House, Winchester, will reopen on 27 November after a major refurbishment led by Russell Sage Studio. The redesign merges contemporary touches with the venue’s historic charm, inspired by its Hampshire surroundings. Tom Hamblet, winner of MasterChef: The Professionals, takes over as head chef, promising a refined menu featuring local ingredients. Hamblet, who had successful stints at Camellia and The Avenue, expressed excitement about highlighting Hampshire’s culinary heritage and establishing the restaurant as a premier dining destination.
Firethorn Trust has secured an £18m debt package from Grosvenor to support its investment in Malmaison York, acquired in June 2024. The 150-room hotel features a sky bar, spa, gym, and flexible workspaces, making it a standout performer within the Malmaison and Hotel Du Vin group. Firethorn’s CFO, Richard Whitby, highlighted Grosvenor’s confidence in the asset, which is part of Firethorn’s strategy to enhance its portfolio with high-quality investments. Grosvenor’s Steph Ball noted the strategic fit of this investment, marking their first investment loan and a step in diversifying their portfolio.
