Today’s news in brief – 23/1/25

Apex Hotels announced a pre-tax profit of £28.4m for the fiscal year ending April 2024, bolstered by an £18.9m gain from the sale of Apex London Wall Hotel in July 2023. Operating profit rose by 9% to £13m, and revenue increased 6.2% year-on-year to £79.4m. The company expanded its portfolio, acquiring Pine Trees Hotel, Meldrum House Country Hotel, The Vineyard Hotel, and DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro. CEO Angela Vickers emphasized strategic growth through acquisitions and refurbishments, including Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel. Vickers also highlighted reductions in carbon footprint despite increased room sales, reinforcing the company’s sustainability efforts.  

The Coach House, an 18th-century guest house in Hambrook near Bristol, was sold for £975,000. The 15-room property, set on 1.2 acres, features period details like exposed beams alongside modern amenities. Originally part of Hambrook Grove Manor, the Coach House was acquired by the manor’s current owner, who plans to maintain it as a guest house and expand its use for events and weddings. Christie and Co oversaw the sale, with agent Sam Roberts praising the swift transaction after adjusting pricing strategy.  

Pedro Da Silva has been appointed general manager of The Cumberland, succeeding Julie Hammond. Previously GM at The Royal Horseguards, Da Silva brings extensive experience from roles across London and internationally with Marriott and RBH Hospitality. He aims to elevate The Cumberland’s status as a lifestyle destination, focusing on its 900 rooms, dining outlets, and event spaces. Da Silva highlighted plans to enhance guest experiences while fostering a culture of excellence.  

Dunluce Lodge, Northern Ireland’s latest five-star hotel, will open in February 2025 after the completion of construction by Martin and Hamilton. Located near Portrush on the Causeway Coast, the hotel features 35 luxury suites, a restaurant, wine vault, spa, and private dining spaces. Overlooking Royal Portrush Golf Club, which will host the 153rd Open Championship in July, the property aims to become a premier destination. GM Stephen Meldrum praised the construction team’s attention to detail, while M&H’s David Hamilton lauded the collaborative approach that ensured the project’s success.
