Airbnb is expanding its platform to include a wide range of services and experiences, aiming to rival traditional hotels by offering more than just accommodation. In response to guest demand, the company is launching services like private chefs, massages, spa treatments, personal trainers, and more in 260 cities. CEO Brian Chesky stated that Airbnb is merging the space and uniqueness of home stays with the perks of hotel-like services. Additionally, Airbnb is rolling out local experiences in 650 cities—ranging from food tours to art workshops—and exclusive “originals” like behind-the-scenes tours. Chesky emphasised that this initiative aims to provide authentic travel experiences led by locals.

Direct hotel bookings in the UK have grown by 7% year-on-year, according to research by BestBookDirect.com. The primary driver is brand loyalty (78%), with guests drawn to loyalty rewards, better website usability, and more detailed information compared to online travel agents (OTAs). Other factors include room selection preferences and a perception of better customer service. However, OTAs remain popular for multi-element bookings like travel packages, especially for international trips. Chris Cottam of BestBookDirect.com noted that increased direct bookings reduce commission costs and support long-term profitability for hoteliers.

Austrian hospitality group Falkensteiner Michaeler Tourism Group (FMTG) is boosting its presence in the UK. With a €400m (£337m) investment plan over five years—half directed to Italy and Croatia—FMTG is increasing its UK outreach through PR, trade shows, and partnerships. The group reported an 11.1% increase in turnover to €264m (£222m) in 2024 and saw over two million overnight stays. CEO Otmar Michaeler said the company aims to grow awareness in the UK while reinforcing its position in core European markets. FMTG also plans to launch a new camping brand this autumn.
