Claremont hotel fire: Part of the historic building collapses

Part of the historic Claremont hotel in Eastbourne has collapsed following a devastating blaze last Friday (22 November), which left six people injured.

Yesterday, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was identified that one of the chimney stacks “looked unstable in the wind”. Following this, the area was cleared to “ensure” public safety, and at around 16.15pm the chimney stack and part of the rear wall then collapsed.

The fire was extinguished on Sunday (24 November), and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the gas supply to the hotel “was now isolated”, and all pockets of fire had been extinguished.

However, the service added that there were concerns over building’s structure, as it had been “badly damaged”.

The blaze, which broke out on Friday morning, began in the basement of the hotel. An investigation into the cause of the fire has also begun.

At the height of the incident, 12 fire engines were on scene, as well as officers and specialist appliances and vehicles. West Sussex Fire and Rescue and Sussex Police were also on hand to provide support.

Six people were treated for minor injuries, with one patient admitted to Eastbourne hospital with reports of “breathing difficulties”.

There is a permanent cordon around the building, and road closures still remain in place.

Meanwhile, Eastbourne Borough Council is providing accommodation for those who live in neighbouring properties.
