In a statement, the Hampshire Fire Service said “nobody was injured and the crews got the fire under control as they fought to save the building which was a two-storey hotel in Winchester Road”. Crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels, jets and foam to tackle the fire.
Neil Odin, the chief fire officer for the service, described the blaze to the Southern Daily Echo as “the largest thatch fire I have attended” in his 24-year career.
