Potters Heron Hotel suffers serious blaze, no injuries

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

Fire crews from across Hampshire have attended a large thatch fire that engulfed the Potters Heron Hotel in Ampfield. The alarm was raised shortly after 6pm on Monday evening, and firefighters suspect the blaze began in a chimney flue.

The local fire service said there were 25 engines and several support vehicles, including two aerial ladder platforms, at the scene. At its peak about 170 emergency service personnel were in attendance and appliances came from 25 fire stations across Hampshire.

In a statement, the Hampshire Fire Service said “nobody was injured and the crews got the fire under control as they fought to save the building which was a two-storey hotel in Winchester Road”. Crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels, jets and foam to tackle the fire.

Neil Odin, the chief fire officer for the service, described the blaze to the Southern Daily Echo as “the largest thatch fire I have attended” in his 24-year career.
