The biennial World Tourism Forum Lucerne (WTFL), is launching a new award recognising innovation in start-up companies.

The Start-Up Innovation Award, which will be held at the forum at the KKL Lucerne in Switzerland, is aimed at encouraging creative and innovative new business ideas in the international tourism sector.

The award finalists will be invited to present their ideas to ‘forum participants’, which will consist of some 400 decision-makers from the fields of tourism, politics, business, finance and science, who will then choose their prize winner and runners-up.

The winner of the award will receive $10,000 (£6,563), while the two runners-up will receive $5,000 (£3,281) each.

Martin Barth, general manager of the WTFL, said: “Innovation is a decisive growth factor for our industry, as again reflected in the programme for this year’s World Tourism Forum Lucerne. Our jury will want to be convinced by idea innovation, concept creativity and dynamic development.

“But entries should also focus on their social and economic impact in respect of sustainable travel and tourism.”

Interested candidates have been invited to submit their entries by February 23, and there concept will be required to be in the ‘initial implementation’ phase or prepared to enter that stage within 12 months.

The finalists will be pre-selected by an international five-member jury.
