The Haweswater Hotel in the Lake District, Cumbria, has been sold off a guide price of over £975,000.
The hotel, which in 2012 won the Best Kept Secret Award for Best UK Location, has been acquired by Stephen O’Sullivan, a businessman from East Sussex.
The art deco property had undergone an extensive refurbish in recent year with previous owner Olivier Cavaliere, who purchased the property in 2007, adding six additional bedrooms to the hotels offering.
O’Sullivan is planning further investment for the hotel to create what he described as the “perfect wilderness retreat”.
O’Sullivan said: “There is nowhere quite like it in the country. The Haweswater has 100 square miles of nature reserve all to itself. I have stayed there a few times and found the location so tranquil and beautiful; it’s like an antidote to the modern world. When you combine that with the wonderful architecture and history of the building, it’s unique.
“The Haweswater will become a destination for people who appreciate the Lake District as nature intended, but still want luxury and fine dining, after a day’s hiking or mountain-biking.”
Dating from 1937, the Haweswater was built in 1937 to replace The Old Donn Bull in Mardale Village, which was flooded to create a reservoir to supply growing needs of an expanding Manchester.
The hotel was sold on behalf of Cavaliere by hotel agent Colliers International.
