Guests evacuated as fire breaks out at Wokefield Park hotel

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

Guests were evacuated from Wokefield Park in Berkshire last night after a fire broke out at the hotel.

Firefighters were called to the property after a blaze broke out at the 18th Century hotel at around 5:30pm yesterday (November 11). It is believed the fire started in a linen area on the ground floor of the building before spreading to the roof.

Twelve fire engines were initially called to the hotel, near Reading, but they were scaled back to six at about 23:30, the fire service said. It is understood that by midnight the fire had been put under control.

The fire is believed to have taken place at the property’s executive centre, which has 222 bedrooms and 30 meeting rooms, and not its original mansion house which has 87 bedrooms.

More than 200 guests were evacuated from the property and were taken by coaches to nearby hotels. No one is believed to have been injured.

Speaking last night, a spokesperson for the De Vere group, which owns the property, said: “We can confirm that there has been a fire within a section of Wokefield Park.

“Our priority at this time is the safety of our guests and staff and we are working very closely with the fire brigade who are on site now.”
