13.5 million Brits plan a UK trip this Christmas and New Year

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

Some 13.5 million Britons – 27% of the adult population) – are planning an overnight holiday trip in the UK this Christmas and New Year, according to new figures released today.

That is according to the latest Christmas Trip Tracker Survey of 1,219 adults from VisitEngland, which found that 12 million of those (24%) are planning on taking an overnight trip in England.

The survey said that this is likely to generate some £3.5bn in tourism spend for the UK economy, £2.3bn of which will be spent in England.

This figure of those planning and overnight stay in the UK was an increase on the survey last year, in which only 21% said they were ‘definitely’ planning on taking an overnight trip. Meanwhile, 15% said that they are undecided.

Some 58% of those definitely planning a trip in England plan to take one trip, while just over a third (38%) are planning to take two or more. The most popular reason for a trip was to visit friends and relatives, with 69% of respondents citing this as a reason.

Other popular seasonal activities include going out for a meal (50%), shopping in the post-Christmas sales (42%) and visiting a Christmas market (33%).

James Berresford, VisitEngland’s chief executive, said: “It is great to see that so many people are planning an overnight trip to another part of the country over the festive period. Wherever you stay in England there is always something exciting to see or do right on the doorstep, and this is never truer than at Christmas.”
