‘Can you deliver my baby?’ Travelodge staff reveal this year’s strangest guest requests

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

Travelodge has revealed the most bizarre requests that some of its 18 million customers have asked whilst staying in one of its 552 hotels during the last 12 months.
The Travelodge hotel teams across the UK receive thousands of strange requests every year, and the oddities range from:

· Can you please deliver my baby?
· What unicorn food do you serve?
· Am I able to bring Spyro my 7ft Komodo dragon to stay with me?
· Can you come and help me find Pikachu?
· Which train from Kings Cross station goes to Hogwarts?
· What is the best location to see wild Haggis?
· Does your pet policy cover my monkey Marcel?
· Will you be my bridesmaid?
· Can we use your hotel for our school nativity play?
· Can you move my hotel room onto the beach so I can sleep by the ocean?

Some of the guests’ requests have been met, as in October, receptionist Karen Dyas from Doncaster M18 Travelodge helped to deliver a baby in the hotel’s car park. Dyas delivered the baby and unblocked the newborn’s airwaves when she realised the infant wasn’t crying.

During the last 12 months, Travelodge has seen a significant growth in more business customers staying at its hotels and detailed below are examples of some of the requests that Travelodge hotel teams have received from its business customers:

· Can I dock my yacht in your car park?
· Can we put a marquee in your cark park to host our corporate event?
· Could you meet a business client on my behalf? I have double booked myself.
· Can you teach me Spanish in an hour? I have a meeting with our Spanish investors.
· Can you do my VAT returns?
· Could you act as my chauffeur for the day? I have an important meeting with some clients.
· Can you answer my work phone and take messages today please?
· Where is the hotel helipad? My boss is flying in this evening and needs somewhere to land.
· Can I book out the hotel manager’s office for a meeting?
· Are you able to do my work expenses?
· Can you write a blog on the local area for me as I need to need to meet another deadline

Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge spokeswoman said: “Our hotel teams at our 552 Travelodge’s annually look after 18 million business and leisure customers. Every day they go above and beyond to help customers. Just recently, our receptionist at Doncaster M18 Travelodge, Karen Dyas was asked to deliver a baby, which she did.
“However, there are some requests that our hotel teams cannot help with, such as: finding a train to take a customer to Hogwarts, building a helipad on top of Edinburgh Central Travelodge hotel and directing an American couple to where they can see wild haggis.”

In addition to the examples already listed above a customer staying at York Layerthorpe Travelodge loved the bed runner on the king-size Travelodge Dreamer bed so much, that she asked the hotel manager if she could make a hat using the bed runner for her to wear to the races.

The hotel receptionist at London Tower Bridge was asked by a customer’s PA if he could dock his yacht in the hotel’s car-park as the hotel is close to the Thames.
