Heritage Estates to invest £1m in refurbishment and recruitment plans

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

Independent hotel group Heritage Estates has announced it will invest £1m over the next five years on an ‘extensive’ refurbishment of Cockliffe Country House Hotel.

The group aims to transform the hotel’s accommodation, dining and events offering at the hotel – located in Burntstump Country Park in Nottinghamshire – which it acquired for around £1m in 2014.

Jon-Paul Davies, managing director of the group, has previously called on the government to increase its focus on apprenticeship schemes and plans on recruiting a number of apprentices to encourage long-term growth a the hotel.

Earlier this year Davies said: “We need to focus on the youth and nurturing talent. In the service industry, someone can come in with nothing in the way of formal academic achievements and flourish. Apprenticeship schemes are perfect for this.

“I believe we need to give opportunities to apprentices to become the leading hospitality figures of tomorrow. With [some] 1.9 million people still unemployed in the UK, the hospitality industry is in a great position to help more people into work.”

The hotel will also undergo a change in its brand, with Nottingham creative-agency Tribe tasked with creating a new logo, colour theme, secondary branding and a redesign of its website.
