World’s first online murder mystery generates record traffic

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

After launching what is believed to be the world’s first online social media murder mystery, luxury hotel, Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa, has experienced a surge in online traffic to its website.

The revolutionary online murder mystery game – believed to be the first of its kind – is entitled ‘The Art of Murder’, and invites Twitter and Facebook users to the hotel virtually, where Lord and Lady Feversham are hosting their annual shoot dinner.

The social media users have so far been introduced to the core characters and have been asked to create their own for a prize, before six users’ characters are chosen to attend the virtual event.

When compared to the same period in 2012, there has been a 700 per cent increase in traffic to the hotel’s website from social media channels. Visits to the website since the campaign was launched when compared to the two week period prior to the launch have also increased by 49 per cent.

Victoria Poole, head of sales and marketing at the Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa said: “It appears to be the first time a murder mystery game has unfolded on social media, with Facebook and Twitter users able to follow the story, present their own characters and ultimately guess the identity of the murderer to be in with a chance of winning a luxury overnight stay at the hotel worth £500.

“As a hotel we’re always looking for revolutionary, novel ways to engage with our guests and those who have visited the hotel previously, and the murder mystery game is just one example. We’re excited to see the progress and watch the game develop as people from around the world attempt to guess the identity of the murderer.”
