Hotel quarantine will wipe £548m from UK economy, says WTTC

Home secretary Priti Patel is expected to announce the new Covid strategy in the House of Commons on Wednesday 27 January

The new hotel isolation system which will target UK travelers coming from high risk countries could wipe more than £548m from the economy every day, according to The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)

Home secretary Priti Patel is expected to announce the new Covid strategy in the House of Commons on Wednesday 27 January, after PM Boris Johnson ruled in favour of the decision. 

The WTTC is now “urgently” calling for the government to announce more support for the travel and tourism sector-  with Gloria Guevara, WTTC President and CEO, stating the sector could be “decimated without a comprehensive support package”.

She said: “International travel will be all but wiped out and according to WTTC analysis the UK economy could lose a staggering £380,000 every minute – or almost £548 million every day.

“The government has a duty to share its economic impact assessment so we fully understand the effect these measures will have on the sector and the wider economy.”

She added: “If the UK is to have any hope of reviving the economy after the pandemic, we have to protect a sector which will be instrumental in kick-starting it.”
