A hotel in Dublin has been criticised by the Irish Minister of Transport after raising the price of a room from €359 (£309) to €999 (£860) for the nights of the Taylor Swift concerts next year.

Eamon Ryan TD, who is the leader of the Green Party, told Newstalk radio that the price was “too high and not worth it”.

Ryan said: “We’ve a real problem when you get that sort of pricing – it does a lot of reputational damage to the city and the country.If someone wants to sell at that price, there’s not an easy way you can come in and say, ‘You can’t.’ But I think for the industry, it’s a real problem because very quickly then you get a reputation of being extortionate and then you lose your business.”

The price increase has also faced public criticism as one Twitter user stated: “Absolutely! Would be paying twice what I paid two years ago. Same time, same hotel. It’s Edinburgh for me this year.”

Swift is due to play venues across the UK and Ireland in June with dates in Edinburgh on the 7 and 8, Liverpool on the 14 and 15, Cardiff on the 18, London on the 21 and 22 and Dublin on the 28 and 29.

She will also play a further two nights at London’s Wembley Stadium in August on the 16 and 17.

Hotels in England are also engaging in similar practices and increasing rates around the concerts.

According to prices on booking.com a superior single room in the Brownlows Inn for one night in Liverpool will currently cost £100 on 14 June 2024.

In contrast, one night in the same room at the same hotel on the 21 June will cost just £48, an increase of over 50%.
