FEATURE: Cookin’ on gas: Why LPG is a popular fuel choice for hotels

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

If you are running a hotel, you need a reliable source of energy for many different applications, including central heating, cooking, hot water, swimming pools and air conditioning. ROB SHUTTLEWORTH, chief executive of UKLPG, explains why the reliability and versatility of LP Gas, is making it popular for rural hotels, even those in remote areas.

The leisure and tourism market is becoming increasingly competitive, with rural hotels being particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in costs. So, to stay afloat, more and more rural hoteliers are switching to liquefied petrolium gas (LPG) in order to help cut costs, reduce carbon emissions and ensure energy security.

A reliable source of energy is critical for all businesses; however, for hotels that need to guarantee guests are comfortable at all times, it is perhaps even more critical to keep heating, air conditioning and swimming pool temperatures constant while ensuring hot water and cooking facilities never falter.

LPG is easy to fit retroactively to any building making it ideal for all rural buildings; with hotels in particular benefitting from its wide range of advantages over traditional energy sources. LPG is ideal for powering all common hotel facilities and has less risk of power cuts. Additionally, with consumers often keen to reduce their carbon footprint, advertising the green credentials of your hotel is now a key selling point and rural hotels report savings of up to 10 tonnes of carbon emissions every year when changing to LPG.

Renting cylinders is the norm, with routine maintenance provided during every refill which offers extra security and peace of mind to facilities managers. Plus renting is also a great way to maintain stable cash flow. As oil becomes increasingly scarce and expensive, LPG offers an excellent alternative, particularly as the UK has the potential to be a net exporter of refined products for the next two decades.

Our firm, UKLPG, is seeing a steady increase in enquiries from hotels keen to switch to LPG, with a significant number of these situated in rural locations. Many of these hotels have struggled with high oil bills and the associated running and maintenance costs of traditional fuels. With customer satisfaction paramount, keeping facilities consistent is vital and LPG can provide the fuelling needs of all hotel applications with ease.

LPG is also rapidly becoming established as the ideal solution for creating comfortable outdoor dining, providing both warmth and cooking gas to enable hotels to extend their facilities or offer al fresco dining during the evening outside of summer months, creating the opportunity for additional covers for restaurants. A great energy option,LPG is the perfect way to dramatically cut carbon emissions, keep costs down and stay ahead of legislation.
