Airbnb has introduced a global ban on all parties and events at the company’s listings until further notice.
The measurements also include a cap on occupancy of 16 so to limit the number of disturbances to surrounding neighbourhoods.
While 73% of Airbnb listings already include bans on parties under the individual “house rules”, tougher regulations are now being rolled out across the board.
The firm insisted that it has imposed “much stricter limits” since last year, such as a 24/7 neighbourhood support hotline in the US and Canada and restrictions on guests under the age of 25.
Yet, the company also recognised the changing situation brought about via the global pandemic.
A statement on the firm’s website said: “In many large jurisdictions, public health mandates on gatherings have changed – and in some places swung back and forth in response to the changing rates of Covid cases – as have regulations on bars, clubs and pubs.
“Some have chosen to take bar and club behavior to homes, sometimes rented through our platform. We think such conduct is incredibly irresponsible – we do not want that type of business, and anyone engaged in or allowing that behavior does not belong on our platform.”
Airbnb also addressed the limit on the number of occupants, adding that while it “understand[s] that 16 is not a magic number”, the rule has been introduced “to mitigate any efforts to misuse an Airbnb for a party”.
