Family wins sole use of Cranleigh Boutique hotel for a weekend

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

A family from Greater Manchester has won the sole use of the Cranleigh Boutique hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere, a prize being called one of the biggest ever given away by a UK hotel.

The hotel launched the ‘Ultimate Prize’ competition in June 2013 when it had 66,000 followers on its Facebook page, with the aim of announcing a winner once the hotel had amassed 100,000 ‘likes’.

The Cranleigh Boutique reached 100,000 likes in November and followers were invited to explain in 20 words why they should win the ‘Ultimate Prize’. The hotel published the top 10 – from 23,500 entries – on its Facebook page with followers voting on their favourite entry.

The prize, estimated to be worth £8,500, was awarded to Charis Oldfield, a 31-year-old mother of three, after followers voted for her entry.

Oldfield said: “I’m still in complete shock to have won this incredible prize and it’s come at the most amazing time. My fiancé, Stuart, has just returned from a six-month tour of duty in the Falklands. He left when our son was only eight weeks old.

“He proposed to me just days before I discovered I had won the Ultimate Prize, so it’s been the best week. We can’t wait to treat our family and friends to a weekend away at the luxurious Cranleigh Boutique and would like to thank everyone who voted for us.”

Stephen Hargreaves, owner of the Cranleigh Boutique, said: “We are beyond delighted that Charis has won the ‘Ultimate Prize’ and believe our Facebook followers chose a very worthy winner.

“It’s been a real journey with this particular competition, the sheer magnitude of which is completely unique. It’s our way of saying ‘thank-you’ to everybody for their support on Facebook.”
