Zanzibar International Hotel in St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex, has been put on the market for a guide price of £1.49m.

The five-star boutique hotel features eight bedrooms inspired by world travelling and is designed to evoke the experience of locations such as Japan, Antarctica, Morocco, Africa and India. Rooms feature spa-style bathrooms with power showers that say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’.

Other features include the award-winning Pier Nine restaurant which serves Mediterranean dishes and seats 50 guests, a garden for outside dining and a contemporary bar.

Max O’Rourke, seasoned traveller and founder of the business, said: “The Zanzibar may well represent an opportunity for a skilled husband-and-wife team seeking a lifestyle business in an up-and-coming town by the sea.

“However, the real potential of the business is in the strength and popularity of the ‘Zanzibar’ brand. As the creator and owner of the business, I envisage the buyer to be an experienced operator with the will and desire to roll out a small chain.”

Andrew Moore, director at Christie & Co’s Maidstone office, handling the sale, said: “Zanzibar International Hotel represents an exceptional opportunity for an investor, skilled owner or couple to take over a remarkable asset with an award-winning reputation.

Hastings and St Leonards are on the rise as a tourist destination and a new link road is due for completion in the next six months and faster rail links to London are due for completion in the next 18 months.”

The hotel has won various award including ‘Eatery of the Year (2014), Sunday Times Travel Magazine’s list of ‘Top 63 Hotels in the World’ and most recently a ‘César Award’ by The Good Hotel Guide.
