The average household spent £42.50 each week on hotels and restaurants in 2014, according to new data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In total, average UK household spending was £531 a week, up from £507 in 2012 and £524 in 2013 – after adjusting for inflation.
The restaurant and hotel category was the fifth largest expenditure following transport (£74.80), housing, fuel and power (£72.70), recreation and culture (£68.80) and food and non-alcoholic drinks (£58.80).
Restaurants and hotels made up 8% of total household expenditure.
There were four regions in which expenditure over the period 2012 to 2014 was higher than the UK average: London, the South East, the East and the South West.
