The “award-winning” Battlesteads Hotel and Restaurant located in Wark, south-west Northumberland, has been put up for sale for a guide price of £2.25m. 

The property is made out of sandstone and reportedly dates back to the mid-1700s. It also offers 22 bedrooms, including five luxury lodges, a restaurant, bar, dining conservatory and a large, heated patio and beer garden. 

In addition, the hotel also features a smokery and its own observatory, which has reportedly been awarded ‘Dark Sky Discovery Site’ status, capitalising on the hotel’s stunning location in Northumberland Dark Skies Park.  

In recent years, the hotel has been run by Richard and Dee Slade for almost 18 years and is said to have become a “highly regarded and successful” business, having accumulated 27 regional and national awards during this time. 

The hotel is said to have been highly praised for its forward-thinking, green business model and eco-features, which have been incorporated throughout the building and grounds. Recent accolades include the Chamber of Commerce – ‘North East Green Business of the Year 2021’, Good Hotel Guide – ‘Editor’s Choice Award 2018’, and North East England Tourism – ‘Hotel of the Year 2018’.

Mark Worley, director of the north-west hospitality team at Christie and Co, said: “This is an amazing hotel operation which has been expanded and developed over the years by Richard Slade, a highly experienced and successful hospitality operator, and his wife Dee, who are now looking for a well-earned retirement. 

“The hotel’s ideal location, green credentials and high trading performance record makes it an outstanding opportunity and a buyer couldn’t really ask for more!”

Richard Slade added: “Over the years, this has been a wonderful project. Learning about energy efficiency, sustainability and applying my newly-gained knowledge to my business has become more and more relevant, particularly in the current economic climate, with ever-increasing operating costs. 

“It has also helped me to realise greater profits and I would hope that the new owner will carry on this ethos and enjoy even greater levels of rewards.”
