The Old Palace in Chester brought to market for £4.7m

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. The Old Palace in Chester, an exclusive-use wedding and events venue set in one of the earliest Georgian buildings, has been brought to market for offers in excess of £4.7m.

The property, which has a south facing location overlooking the River Dee 100 metres from the Chester city centre, was built in 1751 for Samuel Peploe, the Bishop of Chester.

Following a multi-million-pound restoration and refurbishment project which was completed in 2020, this Grade II-listed property has been reimagined as an award-winning, exclusive-use wedding venue.

The works undertaken are to the highest possible standard, from the intricate plasterwork to the elegant furnishings, creating “a seamless blend of old-world charm and contemporary style, whilst preserving the essence of the original building and its rich heritage”.

The property features 23 ensuite bedrooms, including a honeymoon suite, and a variety of wedding and event spaces including The Ballroom, The Garden Terrace and River Kitchen.

Tom O’Malley, director of hotels at Christie & Co, said: “Whilst the current business model focuses on the exclusive weddings and events market, The Old Palace presents an ideal opportunity to broaden alternative revenue streams such as the accommodation offering, and trade independently of functions.

“The bar, restaurant and extensive terrace also could be established as great places to meet in the heart of one of the UK’s prime tourist cities.”
