Top 5 website mistakes hoteliers don’t know they are making

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

You’ve spent a lot of time and money ensuring your hotel is the best around. But what hoteliers sometimes forget is the first experience a guest has with your hotel happens before they set foot in the property, often by visiting your website. So you want your website to deliver the best service too, right?

Having built hotel websites for several years, we regularly come across mistakes hotelier’s make with their sites so we have shared five of them below.

Inconsistent branding

A 5 star hotel portrays a particular brand image which often isn’t followed through on their website. On the other hand, don’t give the impression your hotel is 5 star when it isn’t. Be true to your hotel, otherwise it is likely to impact negatively, particularly on Trip Advisor.

Constricting budgets

Not all properties have huge budgets, but you pay for what you get, much like a hotel. It is better to invest more up-front, otherwise you end up paying for it down the line.

Using non-website designers

With a website you need to consider the user experience from the beginning; a website is not like a magazine or book.

Not ensuring it is mobile or tablet optimised

According to Eye for Travel, Mobile accounted for 20% of all sales in 2013. Remember it frustrates customers if they have to enlarge content to access it. Make it easy for them to book through a fully optimised site, including the booking engine.

Not investing in good photography

The very best website can look disappointing with poor photography. Photos sell hotel rooms, simple.
