The Shieldhill Castle Hotel near Biggar has been put up for sale for a guide price of £1.5m.

Located on Shieldhill Road in Quothquan, South Lanarkshire, the 30-bedroom hotel sits within 6.5 acres of landscaped grounds overlooking the Clyde Valley.

The site includes the main castle building, a stable block, two chalets, and a separate three-bedroom house.

Dating back to 1199, the property has a long history of continuous occupation, mainly by the Chancellor family until it was sold in 1959 and converted into hotel use.

The current layout features 16 bedrooms within the main building, 10 in the stable block, and four across the chalets.

The hotel includes a range of public rooms, and a marquee used for weddings and events. Grounds feature lawns, an ornamental pond and a tree planted to commemorate a visit by Nelson Mandela in 1997.

Alistair Letham, hotel and leisure consultant at Graham and Sibbald, said: “Shieldhill has been a feature in the country house hotel sector in Southern Scotland for many years. The availability of Shieldhill Castle Hotel presents a wonderful opportunity to acquire an established country house hotel, in good order, with excellent business development prospects.”
