A planning application has been submitted to demolish the former Carpetright store in Layerthorpe, York to build a new 188-bedroom Premier Inn hotel.
The four-storey building would compromise parking for 43 cars, including four disabled bays, a drop-off space, six electric car charging bays and 20 cycle spaces.
The hotel would create permanent jobs, according to the application, and offer apprenticeships, training and development programmes to staff.
Premier Inn’s hotels are currently open to key workers only but customers can book rooms from 4 July onwards.
A planning application has been submitted to City of York Council for a “bespoke development” at the former Carpetright site, which is almost an acre in size.
Stuart Rose, acquisition manager at Whitbread, told Hotel Owner: “We’re excited at the prospect of bringing a new Premier Inn to York, and Layerthorpe is a fantastic city centre location for our fourth Premier Inn in the city.
“Not only would it offer visitors more choice of accommodation in the area, this investment would also create new local jobs with the UK’s leading hospitality business and help us to satisfy demand for Premier Inn rooms in the city.”
The news comes as Premier Inn announced the launch of two new room rate products for post-lockdown bookings in order to provide “added flexibility” to customers.
The new ‘Advance’ room rate will enable guests to amend their arrival date up to 1pm on the day of arrival, or to cancel up to 28 days in advance if required.
