The UK has topped Europe’s hotel development pipeline despite a 7.2% fall in the total number of rooms under contract in Europe, according to new figures from STR Global.
STR’s Global Construction Pipeline Report for March found that there are currently 868 hotels totalling 139,057 rooms under contract in Europe – representing a 7.2% decrease in the rooms under contract compared with March 2014.
Europe was also found to have 59,194 rooms in 364 hotels under construction in March – a 4.1% decrease from the same time last year.
Despite this, the UK reported the most rooms under construction with 11,542 rooms in 80 hotels, while only three other countries reported more than 5,000 rooms under construction, including Russia (9,735 in 51 hotels), Turkey (8,970 rooms in 52 hotels) and Germany (6,183 rooms in 37 hotels).
