Wynyard Hall hotel in County Durham has announced it is to open a walled garden to the public as part of a £5.3m investment programme.
The garden, which opens on August 4 and will contain more than 3,000 roses, is part of a long-held dream of the hotel’s current owner Sir John Hall
The £1.6m development, located at the north of the 16-bedroom hotel, will feature a visitors’ centre, shop and a cafe which will serve locally-sourced produce.
Allison Antonopoulos, managing director at Wynyard Hall Hotel, said: “It is magnificent beyond our wildest dreams. It has been years in the planning, many months in the developing and will, we hope, give a lifetime’s pleasure to all who come to see it.”
The garden has been designed and planted by the award-winning Royal Horticultural Society landscape architect, Alistair Baldwin.
Baldwin said: “The walled garden will be breathtakingly beautiful. Visitors will see a truly dazzling display of roses, in a design which pays tribute to the ancient heritage of the walled garden, yet takes it firmly forward into a new stage of development.”
Wynyard Hall said that 30 new jobs have been created by the redevelopment of the walled garden – the second stage in a programme of work to create ‘The Gardens’ at Wynyard Hall, which will eventually cover four acres and be one of the largest rose gardens in the UK.
The first stage of the £5.3m development, adjacent to the walled garden, was the installation of a grand marquee and management suite, used for weddings and large scale corporate events.
Further stages will include the £2m investment in the creation of a cookery school, children’s garden and designated walk through its estate.
