Marriott to open 22 new AC-branded hotels

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

Marriott International has announced plans to open 22 new AC Hotel branded properties throughout 2016, with two scheduled for the UK.

The company said that the expansion plans for AC Hotel – which is inspired by ‘classic-modern’ designs and Spanish heritage – are part of an effort to “solidify” its position in the boutique hotel sector and attract the millennial traveller.

Five hotels are expected to open across the globe in January, with two properties in the UK – one in Birmingham and one in Manchester – expected to open later this year. A further 15 will open around the world throughout 2016.

Tina Edmundson, global officer of luxury and lifestyle brands, said: “AC Hotels by Marriott is a new breed of lifestyle hotels created to inspire the next-generation traveller through innovative design.

“Our rapidly growing portfolio of design-led hotels illustrates Marriott’s commitment to making distinctive architecture and design affordable and accessible for creatives and entrepreneurs around the world.”

In November last year Marriott acquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in a $12.2bn (£8bn) deal, creating the world’s largest hotel company with more than 5,500 hotels and 1.1 million rooms across the world.
