Dubai ship-building firm Drydocks World has announced plans to develop the Water Discus Hotel, an underwater hotel.
The oil-rich Emirate already boasts the tallest building in the world and a series of man-made islands off its coastline. Now – together with Swiss company Big InvestConsult – the city will be able to boast yet another ostentatious marvel of architecture.
Designed by Deep Ocean Technology (DOT), the hotel will be composed of two discs; one above water and one 10 metres below, that are connected by a vertical shaft containing lifts and stairs. The underwater disc will have a bar, dive centre and 21 bedrooms. The rooms’ views benefit from a special lighting system that will illuminate the flora and fauna outside but if guests wanted to get a closer look at the sea life, they can operate moveable waterproof cameras.
Deep Ocean Technology explained that having two discs “will allow guests to admire the depths of the ocean, while making the most of the warm climate.”
Safety is always of the utmost importance in the construction of hotels, and DOT says that its designs are built to the highest requirements. The top disc is strong enough to withstand a tsunami and flooding, while the underwater disc surfaces in the event of danger.
The Water Discus Hotel will be just the beginning of Drydocks World and Big InvestConsult’s plans which, according to The Khaleej Times, include more underwater hotels and the development of floating cities.
