The Savoy washes away its laundry issues with Miele

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

With five-star ratings come great expectations, and for centuries London’s Savoy Hotel has prided itself on its premium guest experience; providing quality through every aspect of the guest service. Delivering on quality also extends to the hotel’s laundry. With 268 rooms the hotel needs to launder over 6,000 items per day. A recent survey of UK hotel workers by Miele found cleanliness of the bedroom and bedding to be the highest priority for guests staying in a hotel – even more important than a welcoming reception and good value for money. For hotels like The Savoy, laundry and great guest experience go hand in hand.

The Savoy’s laundry was made up of a range of different machines that had been brought in over the years to replace broken models. Due to the age of some of the machines, most no longer had service contracts and it was becoming difficult to get the machines repaired quickly when required. In some cases, machines could be out of order for weeks on end, stalling productivity and requiring a proportion of the large workload to be outsourced.

Keen for the hotel to keep its laundry service on-premise to meet demand and ensure quality standards were met at all times, The Savoy decided to upgrade its current facility. It was essential that the hotel and its laundry remained fully operational and avoided any downtime throughout the implementation process.

The Savoy approached Hampshire-based commercial laundry provider, SLS, to assess its laundry facility. SLS spent a day in the facility to fully understand the hotel’s laundry challenges; and was immediately able to recommend Miele as the perfect match for The Savoy’s quality ethos. Miele could also deliver great economic value in terms of durability.

To avoid any disruption to operations and staff, machines were temporarily set up so The Savoy could carry on with business as usual.
SLS implemented a phased-installation of the following laundry equipment:

  • 5 x Miele PW6321 Washers
  • 5 X PT8807 Gas Dryers
  • 1 X Miele PW6207 Washer
  • 1 X Miele PW6080 Washer
  • 1 X Primus DX13/13 Twin stack dryer

Having invested in Miele as a trusted premium brand, The Savoy’s laundry and management teams now has a reliable and fully functioning on-premise laundry that can meet the quality standards expected by The Savoy’s guests. The new system is set to service the hotel’s high demand for years to come, providing peace of mind for staff and attractive lifetime costs.

In addition, The Savoy’s laundry has ongoing service support from SLS so any queries can be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

James Holmes, SLS director commented, “We are delighted to be working with such an iconic brand. SLS’s reputation for outstanding customer service, allied to the quality of the Miele brand, chimed perfectly with the Savoy’s values. Due to a rigorous planning process and the extensive knowledge and experience of engineers, the installation process was seamless and resulted in zero downtime and faultless integration of the new machines into the current laundry set up.”

Laima Simonaitiene, linen room manager at the Savoy Hotel added: “We were struggling with the equipment we had before. It’s very important to provide an excellent service for our guests. The installation has gone very well and it’s a world away from our previous set up.”
