Coombe Abbey Hotel welcomes new GM and operations manager

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

Coombe Abbey Hotel, near Coventry, has made two senior appointments to its management team, welcoming a new general manager and operations manager as it undergoes a period of sustained growth.

Hugh Boyd has joined the site as general manager, while Matthew Cullen has returned to the industry in the operations manager role.

Boyd joins from Wilson Vale where he was general manager of catering at Aston University and has previously held senior management positions at The Belfry Hotel and Spa, as well as Moor Hall Hotel and Spa.

Meanwhile, Cullen spent two years working for the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia managing a royal property. Earlier in his career he worked in private yachts in the Mediterranean and luxury chalets in the Alps for boutique ski company Hip Hideouts.

Commenting on their new roles, Boyd said: “Coombe Abbey has a well-deserved reputation for its customer service – and I have experienced that as a guest at weddings and various events over the years. The property is genuinely unique and a real jewel in the region’s hospitality crown and I am very much looking forward to helping grow the business in all areas.

“The hotel is part of a very progressive and ambitious group, with Coombe Abbey very much at its heart so it is a very exciting time to be involved.”

Cullen added: “I was very keen to move back into the hospitality industry, and Coombe Abbey has so much to offer on an operations front, so it should be a fascinating role.”

The hotel’s operator, No Ordinary Hospitality Management, has expanded “significantly” in the last 12 months taking on venues including St Mary’s Guildhall and Priory Row Cottages in Coventry as well as opening three new venues in the city’s War Memorial Park.

At Coombe Abbey Park it has opened the Abbey Artisan Market, the Sundae Club 1950’s-inspired dessert diner, and Flowers at Coombe alongside the Café in the Park and the Kiosk in the Park.

Ron Terry, group operations director of No Ordinary Hospitably Management, said: “The success of the wider group – with some very exciting new venues coming on board – means we needed to appoint a team solely dedicated to operating and growing Coombe Abbey Hotel and we are delighted to be bringing Hugh and Matthew on board.

“The hotel has emerged strongly from the pandemic and we are keen to make that growth long term and sustainable. Hugh and Matthew have a wealth of experience and it is great to have them in our team.”
