Twelve Architects’ proposal for the regeneration of the Redcliffe Hotel in Paignton, Devon, has been granted planning approval by Torbay City Council.
London studio, Twelve Architects, has been appointed to restore and refurbish the Grade II Listed Redcliffe Hotel. The project, which was granted planning permission in March, will be the first comprehensive redevelopment of the entire building since it was first built 160 years ago.
Located in Paignton, Devon, the newly-upgraded Redcliffe Hotel will accommodate 55 guest rooms, a renovated pool area, enhanced treatment and spa facilities, a sea-facing gym studio and a fine dining restaurant and bar. The central rotunda, which is the principal existing element of the original building, will be renovated into lounges, a hotel bar and executive guest suites.
Formal gardens will also be restored with an existing fountain reinstated in its former location, a nod to the original landscape design.
The original features that remain intact will be cleaned and repaired, and the unsympathetic modern additions will be stripped back and reinstated with details characteristic of the original design. The wing extensions will be reinstated with features such as arched windows and doors, towers, parapet castellations, ornamental domes and finials to match the original rotunda. A new entrance building will replace the 20th Century extension, allowing the curve of the rotunda to be experienced on arrival and become the building’s focal point.
Rob Cox, CEO of Tudor Hotels Collection, who own the hotel said: “We are thrilled to share our plans for the Redcliffe Hotel and can’t wait to get started. We have worked hard with our fantastic designers to ensure that our renovation captures the essence of the building’s unique history and eccentric design, whilst providing our guests with an incredible, luxury experience.”
