Wheyrigg Hall Hotel freehold brought to market for £850k

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

Wheyrigg Hall Hotel in Wigton, Cumbria, has been brought to market for the first time in over 35 years for an asking price of £850k for the freehold.

Situated close to Silloth and the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wheyrigg Hall Hotel comprises 18 en-suite bedrooms plus a three-bedroom owner’s apartment, as well as a bar and restaurant.

The property has also benefited from the addition of a five pitch caravan site with electric hook-ups, which has proved “very popular” with visitors seeking weekend and midweek breaks.

The current owner, Helen Benson, acquired the hotel in 1988 with her husband Joseph. Following his passing, their son Stephen stepped up to run the business with his mother.

According to Benson, the hotel continues to attract guests who are drawn to the Solway Coast and the scenery of the North Lake District

Helen Benson said: “From the moment Joe and I bought the hotel in 1988, we worked hard to create a wonderful business that we, as a family, could share and enjoy with our guests and the local community, and it has been a pleasure to do this for so long.

“Over the years we have met thousands of guests, served countless meals and hosted so many memorable celebrations, but now it is time for us to step aside. We do hope that the new owners will enjoy Wheyrigg Hall and their time here as much as we have.”

Graham Wilkinson, hotel agent at Christie and Co, added: “It is a pleasure to be able to help Helen retire and Stephen to explore new opportunities. The Benson family have made a major contribution to the history of Wheyrigg Hall and over the last 35 years they have embraced many changes to develop a popular and successful business that is firmly part of the local community.

“The demand for businesses with a great local reputation that offer a range of income streams is always high and we do expect that there will be a good level of interest.”
