Athenaeum Hotel and Residences completes ‘full-scale’ refurbishment

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

The Athenaeum Hotel and Residences in Piccadilly, London, will unveil 134 refurbished bedrooms, 10 suites and a new guest destination this November.

The property refurbished all 10 of its floors, including the bedrooms and suites, and also made the decision to transform the hotel’s top real-estate – The Penthouse – into ‘The View’, a members-style club accessible to hotel guests only.

The renovation work was handled Martin Hulbert, which focused on implementing Mayfair’s heritage into the property whilst also keeping the “contemporary, discerning traveller in mind”.

GM Bernard Murphy said: “We have breathed new life into the art deco walls of The Athenaeum, but respectfully retained all of the English quirks and oddities that made her great.

“We want guests to rediscover The Athenaeum – our restaurant, created by Michelin-starred Galvin brothers, our award-winning bar team – and all the hidden treasures of Mayfair.  And when they do, we want them to enjoy an unexpected and surprising experience; surprisingly good.”
