The Royal Yacht Britannia has announced the first ‘boatique’ hotel in Scotland after its acquisition of the iconic heritage vessel MV Windsor Castle.
In a near £1m investment, the classically-designed ship will be converted into a 25-bedroom luxury ‘boatique’ hotel that will be berthed permanently adjacent to Britannia in Edinburgh’s historic port of Leith.
The ship, which is expected to arrive in Leith during the week of August 25, will undergo an 18-month conversion before its scheduled opening in spring 2016.
A statement from the company read that the development represents “natural organic growth” for Britannia, which has officially been Scotland’s best visitor attraction for the last nine years and UK’s number one attraction on TripAdvisor.
Bob Downie, Britannia’s chief executive, said: “After many years of searching for the right ship, we are delighted that we have been able to acquire this iconic vessel and look forward to opening Scotland’s first boutique hotel.
“As a youngster growing up in Oban I have very fond memories of seeing the Fingal and I am delighted that the long-term future of another much loved vessel has been secured.”
