Budget hotel chain Travelodge has opened its first hotels in Winchester and Letchworth Garden City.
Collectively the two properties represent an investment of nearly £15m and have created 35 new jobs. With the two additions, Travelodge now operates 583 hotels across the UK, Ireland and Spain.
Winchester Travelodge is the first of two hotels the budget hotel chain is opening in Hampshire this year. The other hotel is the company’s first hotel in Gosport which is scheduled to open at the end of 2019. Winchester Travelodge, a 62-room hotel is located in the heart of the city centre close to the Cathedral.
Letchworth Garden City Travelodge is the company’s first hotel in the town. The 73-room hotel features an on-site restaurant called the Bar-Café and has free on-site parking. The hotel represents an investment of £7m for the landlord and created 22 new jobs within the community.
It is also the company’s first hotel to open as part of its Hertfordshire expansion programme which includes the group looking to open hotels in eight up and coming locations across the county. This includes sites in: Hertford/Ware, Hoddesdon/Broxbourne, Potters Bar, Radlett, Rickmansworth, Stevenage, Waltham Cross and Watford.
Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge spokeswoman, said: “We are delighted to officially open our first hotels in Winchester and Letchworth Garden City and extend our UK network to 566 locations. Both hotels have got off to a flying start and are set for a busy year ahead.
“Britain’s travellers are changing. We expect more and increasingly we travel to a wider range of places. More and more of us are working away from home during the week, and we’re taking more long weekends.”
She added: “Therefore Travelodge now has to satisfy the needs of travellers who just want the essentials at a low price, and of those who also value the little extras. Therefore we’re focused on making sure we can offer travellers the right choice, in the right place, at the right price.”
