New Forest site sold to Hillbrooke Hotels

In this episode we speak to Anthony Hunt, partner and co-head of Corporate Real Estate at law firm Howard Kennedy. We discuss why 2026 may be seen as a pivotal year for boutique hotels, unpack the rise of global nomadism and how this is shaping demand and trends across hospitality, and how a strong team and clear, consistent messaging and offerings are key to securing investment.

The Spot in the Woods hotel in the New Forest has been sold to hotel and pub operator Hillbrooke Hotels.

The property was acquired by Gerard and Nina Basset in 2007, following the sale of the Hotel du Vin Group which was co-founded by Gerard. The boutique luxury retreat has won “numerous hospitality accolades” during their tenure of the site.

The site was formerly known as TerraVina, and was a “destination for wine lovers”. After Gerard was diagnosed with cancer in 2017, the couple rebranded the hotel as Spot in the Woods, a “relaxed kitchen café with rooms”.

Following Gerard’s death in January 2019, the property was put up for sale. Nina was aided in the process by Andrew Theobold of Independent Hotel Consultants and Advisors (IHCA).

Nina Basset said: “I am delighted that Spot in the Woods will continue to operate with the current team under the new ownership of Hillbrooke Hotels.

“Gerard and I worked together for many years and it was his final wish that a suitable buyer could be found to enable the business to flourish after his death.”

She added: “I have been fortunate to have enjoyed a rich career in hospitality from my days at Chewton Glen (where Gerard and I first met) to becoming the youngest ever hotel and restaurant inspector before helping to create the phenomenon that was Hotel du Vin.

“I am grateful to the numerous people whom I have met along the way and who supported us as a family during two difficult years leading up to Gerard’s death. The time is now right to hand over the business to others and I look forward to the end of one era and the start of a new chapter.”
