French hotel group Accor has acquired around a 35% stake in boutique hotel brand Mama Shelter, with plans to open a London location under this umbrella.

The partnership will give Mama Shelter access to Accor’s development and distribution network, which it hopes will allow it to accelerate its openings and offer customers new destinations.

The brand expects to open 20 new Mama Shelters in the next five years. Shelter will open in Los Angeles in early 2015, and the company is working on opening an address in Lille, London, Zurich, Mexico City, Seoul, Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York and a second location in Paris.

Sébastien Bazin, chairman and CEO of Accor, said: “This agreement is the outcome of a beautiful encounter and a shared desire to learn from our respective talents. I am very happy to be embarking on this new adventure. Thanks to this partnership, Accor is enriched by the original know-how that has made Mama Shelter such a splendid success.”

Jérémie Trigano, general manager of Mama Shelter, said: “We are pleased and proud to welcome Accor alongside us. Their presence will allow Mama to benefit from a major international platform and to share our philosophy with an even greater tribe.”

The Mama Shelter brand currently has a portfolio of five hotels – located in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and Istanbul – with a total of 633 bedrooms.
