Lumley Castle Hotel has been put on the market for an asking price of £6m.
The 14th Century, 4-star property has 74 bedrooms and suites, conference and banqueting facilities as well as its own dungeon.
The Grade I listed castle, which was the seat of the Earl of Scarborough for over 700 years, also features six acres of parkland and is close to the A1 motorway, overlooking Durham County Cricket ground.
The sale is being handled by Christie & Co directors, Simon Stevens from its London office and Mark Worley, based in Newcastle.
Stevens said: “This is a genuine retirement sale following 43 years of continuous ownership by passionate clients who have developed the castle from a medieval banqueting venue to one of the region’s foremost hotels with a profitable trading reputation to support the business.”
Worley added that as a local he was fully aware of the “regional affection” towards the building and said the hotel represents an “excellent trophy asset and business proposition”.
