A £260m project that includes a dual-branded hotel at Gateshead Quayside has been given the all clear, despite local opposition.
The scheme will include an arena and conference centre alongside the 330-room hotel, in what the council deemed a “world class” development.
According to the BBC, local residents had called for a halt to the “monstrously overbearing” project, but the potential job opportunities and injection into the local economy has resulted in a lack of government intervention.
A Gateshead Council spokesman told the BBC’s Local Democracy Reporting Service: “The Secretary of State has decided not to call in this application.
“Construction is due to begin early in 2021, giving a boost to the local supply chain and creating job opportunities at a time when the region needs it the most.”
The site is set to attract an annual 400,000 visitors and bring over £60m a year to the local economy, creating 2,000 jobs in the process.
While its developer, Ask Patrizia, has revealed that it could open in late 2023, the hotel operator has not yet been announced.
