Jean-Christophe Novelli has created a new sandwich to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the invention of the celebrated British snack.
The French chef, famous for his work as head chef in hotels across Europe, dreamt up the Leerdammer Celebration Sandwich, which combines Leerdammer cheese with bacon, artichokes and salad. It is being adopted by the British Sandwich Association as its Sandwich of the Month for July.
The sandwich’s creation is traditionally ascribed to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was said to be fond of the food because it allowed him to continue playing cards without getting them greasy from eating meat with his bare hands.
