Fort Road Hotel, located on Margate’s seafront, is set to open its doors to the public 1 August 2022 and will be run by general manager Tom Fogg.
The hotel, co-founded by Matthew Slotover, founder of Frieze magazine and fairs, Gabriel Chipperfield, private residential developer and Tom Gidley, an artist, will offer a “reinterpretation of the traditional hotel that provides a unique experience rooted in design, art, architecture and food”.
The site was purchased at auction four years ago and rebuilt and reimagined by the three partners and Fleet Architects with an additional top floor and terrace to create a 14-room hotel.
The new design features a “distinctive colour scheme, carefully selected artworks and period furniture adorn every part of the hotel with a guest-only roof terrace offering 360° panoramic views of the vast Margate seascape and surrounding town”.
The property offers 14 bedrooms and a 35-cover ground floor restaurant that will serve breakfast, lunch, tea and cake, and dinner, offering seasonal home-cooking with a focus on ingredients sourced from local suppliers.
The hotel’s head chef Daisy Cecil has collaborated with consultant Gioconda Scott on a menu inspired by late 19th and early 20th Century female food writers including Isabella Beeton, Elizabeth David and Jane Grigson.
Fort Road Hotel’s 60-cover bar has a wine list that includes a mixture of classic and natural wines, all organically farmed. European producers will be joined by the best of British winemakers. Alongside the open area, there is a 24-cover bookable vault.
