Travelodge unveils plans for two new hotels

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

Travelodge, the UK budget hotel chain, which operates over 600 hotels across the UK, Ireland and Spain, has announced that it has exchanged contracts for two new hotels on the east coast of England.

The two new locations are in Skegness and Harwich, with construction on both developments having also commenced on site. The hotels are being developed by Burney Group and constructed by Faircloth Construction Ltd.

The new 80-bed Travelodge hotel in Skegness is being built on a former crazy golf site on South Parade, and will create 30 new jobs. The hotel will be built to Travelodge’s new premium look design, and will feature the company’s in-house restaurant 85 Bar Cafe, which will be located on the top floor of the six-storey building, giving views over the sea.

The hotel will be built alongside a Starbucks Drive Thru. Skegness Travelodge is expected to be open in time for Summer 2025.

Meanwhile, a new 68-room Travelodge hotel is also being developed in Harwich, located on a six-acre Stanton Europark site next to Harwich Port and Enterprise Zone. The hotel will operate alongside Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, Howdens and Screwfix and will open in Summer 2025.

Travelodge has a long-standing relationship with Burney Group, which developed the Ipswich Central Travelodge, which opened last year, and the Boston Travelodge.

The hotel chain is continuing to expand its hotel portfolio in the UK, and has opened five hotels this year with London Oval, Bristol, Colchester, Rotherham and London Bermondsey and a 6th hotel (London Beckenham) to open later this year.

Travelodge has a further requirement to open 300 more hotels across the UK, including further locations in Essex and Lincolnshire.

Tony O’Brien, UK Development director, Travelodge said: “Travelodge is delighted to continue the expansion of our network of hotels throughout the UK and these new hotels will be fantastic additions to our portfolio. Both hotels are located in prime locations of Skegness and Harwich, suitably located for both our business and leisure customers visiting the areas.

“It is a pleasure to be working with the Burney Group again and we are sure that these hotels will perform well for us – creating new jobs and boosting the local economies. We are looking forward to opening both in time for Summer 2025.”

Daren Burney, Burney Group, added: “Delighted to be able to bring forward the two new Travelodge Hotels to add to our Hotel Portfolio. Both hotels provide real regeneration benefits notwithstanding the economic benefits and job creation to each local area.”
