A hotel in Devon has been named the most romantic hotel in Europe in this year’s 2016 Traveller’s Choice Awards for Romantic Hotels, announced by TripAdvisor.

The Old Rectory Hotel in Martinhoe was named the most romantic hotel in Europe as well as the second most romantic hotel in the world, while Edgar House in Chester – which was named the ‘world’s best small hotel’ in January – came fifth in Europe and 17th in the world.

The awards, which are based on reviews and opinions collected by TripAdvisor over the past year, also saw the Grasmere Hotel in Cumbria being named the 14th most romantic hotel in Europe.

A spokesperson for TripAdvisor said: “The results of this year’s awards show that travellers need not travel far to experience some of the best rated romantic getaways in the world – they can be found right here in the UK.”

Overall, Cumbria was named as the UK’s most romantic destination with three of the UK’s top ten romantic hotels located in the county.

The Grasmere Hotel in Grasmere took third place in the UK and fourteenth in Europe, while Cedar Manor Hotel and Restaurant and Applegarth Villa and Restaurant, both located in Windermere, came in at fifth and ninth place respectively in the UK.
