Plans have been unveiled for the opening of a new Hilton-branded hotel in Stoke-on-Trent city centre.
Stoke-on-Trent Council said the opening of the Hilton Garden Inn shows “confidence” in its city centre. The plan for a new hotel follows a franchise agreement between the Hilton group and Smithfield hotel developer Genr8.
The 140-guestroom hotel will be located in the Smithfield area of the city near national attractions such as Alton Towers and Trentham Gardens, as well as being situated near the city’s main retail area and tourist attractions.
Dave Conway, council leader, said: “This truly is a fantastic piece of news for Stoke-on-Trent and a major milestone in the continued transformation of the city centre. Hilton is a name famous around the world and a lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to make this development a reality.
“It will not only improve the hotel offer in the city – which is vital if we are to be successful with our UK City of Culture bid – but will also help grow our tourism industry and further revamp the area with increased footfall.”
The council previously agreed to put forward £4.55m towards the development, with a further £2.95m grant from the Local Enterprise Partnership.
If planning permission is approved this year, the hotel is expected to open its doors in 2019.
