QHotels, a collection of 21 unique and luxurious 4-star hotels across the UK, has welcomed 14 colonies of honey bees to six of its hotels.
Stratford Manor, Chesford Grange, the Park Royal, Crewe Hall, the Queens and Ashford International Hotel have welcomed the bees in an attempt to combat their falling numbers, which in the last 100 years, has seen a 75 per cent decrease in hives in the UK.
Each hotel has two dedicated beekeepers from the local Beekeepers Association that monitor the bees to maintain the colonies, which could be home for up to 40,000 bees in the future. In addition hotel guests may even be able to sample the homemade honey produced as part of the breakfast menu at the hotels.
QHotels’ managing director, Michael Purtill, commented: “We take environmental issues very seriously and with news that the bee population is facing extinction, we thought there was no better time to welcome them. It really will be an added bonus if we’re able to let hotel guests enjoy locally produced honey as a result.”
